Introduction to Editorial Skills - a delegate's viewpoint

Early in her career in publishing Lana participated in the two-day Introduction to Editorial Skills

“Despite working in a publishing company for 2 years, I thought this course may be out of my depth. I was pleasantly surprised!

"The course is structured to educate people who have just started in publishing and those who have worked in publishing for many years. The material and exercises I received before the course were comprehensive and essential in preparing me for the day sessions. The sessions were intense but enjoyable and fun with a relaxed atmosphere,

“I was happy to find that there were enough breaks including some yummy snacks that kept me going through the day as well as a buffet lunch, which accommodated my dietary requirements.

“Sarah, my tutor, has over a decade of experience with copy-editing and proofreading and, importantly, knows how to educate others in these areas. Therefore, it did not feel like a teacher and student relationship, instead it felt like we were all on par with one another.

“The group was small, which helped make the session more personal, allowing me to feel more comfortable in opening-up and speaking out. This was useful as after each exercise we did we went around the group explaining what we did as well as getting feedback which benefited the person speaking as well as everyone else in the group. If you are looking to learn about copy-editing and proofreading or to enrich your knowledge on what you already know this is the course for you.

“Working in publishing we become so accustomed to the way that our company copy-edits and proofreads that we forget the skills that are universally implemented, and this course reminds us of these universal techniques."
