The Publishing Training Centre is delighted to present An introduction to e-book production, a workshop with industry expert Srishti Kadu, on 18 July 2024.

This 90-minute session will explain everything you need to know about making and checking e-books, so they are as good as they can be. It is an interactive, educational course, with questions actively encouraged.

The workshop will provide an overview of the process, showing you how to create an ePub from InDesign. It will also look at other file formats and advise on best practices and tools to use.

Who is it for?

  • Those new to production or aspiring to obtain a production role.
  • Anyone moving into production from another function.
  • Production assistants or juniors who want to learn more about e-books or different facets of production.
  • Self-published authors who want to know how to publish their work as an e-book.

It’s recommended that you have a basic understanding of Adobe InDesign, Acrobat PDF and XML to join the workshop, but this is not essential.

What will you learn?

This seminar will give you an understanding of the process of producing e-books. You’ll learn:

  • what an e-book is, including the different types and file formats, such as ePubs and ePDFs, as well as fixed-format and reflowable e-books.
  • How to understand and read metadata for e-books, and what parts of metadata are important for e-book production.
  • How to create a simple reflowable ePub file.
  • What needs to happen when converting a print book file to an ePub.
  • The best apps for checking your work.
