I undertake copy-editing, templating, proofreading, fact checking and associated tasks in academic and trade nonfiction titles, reference works, and ESL teaching materials.
I have broad experience across the humanities, covering literature and history, philosophy and theology, art and architecture, music and dance, fashion and photography; my particular specialisms are the literature and history of the European Middle Ages and Renaissance. I am also a longstanding member of the production team for Oxford Scholarly Editions Online, preparing scholarly editions for a pioneering digital platform.

Skills and Experience
• ability to provide high standards of copy-editing and proofreading on paper and on screen, handling text, images, technical figures and tables, music examples, bibliography and references, and complex hybrid formats (e.g. combined print, digital, and audio-visual components)
• ability to follow a brief and style sheet, always returning work on schedule and within budget
• expert technical proficiency in MS Word and Adobe Acrobat (PDF mark-up); sound working knowledge of the wider MS Office suite
• familiarity with BSi standard marks for copy-editing and proofreading on paper
• personable and sympathetic demeanour; able to establish excellent working relationships with authors and publishing colleagues
• sensitivity to both the author’s voice and the needs of readers; ability to reconcile the two
• detailed knowledge of a range of house styles (incl. APA, Chicago, Oxford); competence working in both British and US English
• powerful research skills; ability to check facts and judge the authority of sources both quickly and accurately
• aptitude for editing at both macro and micro levels: ability to assess overall argument, tone, and structure while also maintaining attention to fine details
• experience editing for both print and digital
• understanding of rights and permissions, copyright, intellectual property, GDPR, etc.
• excellent problem-solving, organization, communication and presentation skills
• ability to spot basic errors in several European languages: French, German, Italian (and Latin), Spanish; awareness of their respective bibliographical conventions; Middle English and Old French at doctoral level
• confidence editing material by ESL authors
• insight into the post-editing publication process, with particular interests in typography and design
• awareness of issues surrounding web design and functionality
• I have also written and presented academic conference papers, chaired research networks and reading groups, and had my own writing published in outlets ranging from academic journals to hobbyists' magazines and local newspapers.
